Will 2014 be the year you pass your IELTS?

It’s a New Year, time for all those New Year resolutions. Have you made any yet?
I really want you to make just one resolution this year and that is to pass your IELTS.

It’s that simple – focus and pass – that’s it really.

So, how do you focus on this one thing?

There are a few things to understand about creating a really strong goal.

  • Firstly you need to name it –“I will pass my IELTS in 2014” or “BY June 2014 I will be in Australia”  or “2014 is the very last time that I will take the IELTS exam because the next time I sit it I WILL PASS”.
  • Next you have to commit to this goal. You have to really want it, focus on it and then take steps to achieve it. Don’t underestimate how powerful your mind can be when you really make a strong decision.
  • Now work out the steps that will get you there. The best place to start is with where you are now. Analyse your last test result, your last practice. How far away are you from your goal? Not overall, but in each part. Which areas are giving you the most problems? Look at each part or each tests and each type of question you will know which ones are a problem – they’ll be the ones that you hate or dread doing – make a list of these.
  • Now set your targets what do you want in your listening and reading out of 40? (this will be equal to the band that you want) how many points do you need to gain in order to reach your target? Where are you losing points? Whish sections and which questions – this is where you need to focus – and what you focus on always improves. Break down you target into smaller ones e.g. if you need 6 points to reach your band then try to improve by 1 point this week, then 2 the week after etc., until you have the score that you want.
  • What do you want in speaking and writing? How far away are you? What is stopping you from getting this score? If you don’t know then you have to find out and you may not be able to do this by yourself – this is where you might need to get some help.
  • What resources do you need to make sure you can achieve your goals? Do you need books, or specific online exercises, a vocabulary or grammar resource? Do you want a friend to study with or to join a class or an online group?  Do you actually need a teacher to help you? Get hold of these resources so that you can get started soon.
  • Now you have everything you need, you have a plan and you have a big goal so now is the time to get started. Track your progress using a learning diary – this is a daily record of how you feel you are doing. Some if it will be your scores day by day and some of it will be personal commentary about your progress write down when you are happy because of your success and when you don’t feel happy because maybe you didn’t reach the score you wanted. It is all important and you will find that if you are really focused there will be far more happy moments than sad ones and make sure you acknowledge this.

I am absolutely certain that if you follow this step by step guide every day and be clear about your goal and how to achieve it you will pass your IELTS in 2014 with the band score that you want.
