Keeping focused on your IELTS goal

I received this testimonial today from a student on my IELTS Step By Step programme who has just taken the IELTS and got a fantastic score. This what Luciano wrote:

“This course (IELTS Step By Step) is really helpful if you are looking for band 7 or higher. It covers all the areas (listening, reading, writing and speaking) in depth and offers you a lot of material to study. This journey is not easy and requires determination and discipline, but (IELTS) Step By Step course also helps with these.

With the help of Berni and her course, I was able to get band7 in all the skills (and 7.5 in speaking) in my first attempt!”

Luciano was in many ways a perfect student;   systematic, thorough, patient, dedicated and focused. He also took advantage of everything that the course offered him – the daily lessons, all the exercises, email support and the Facebook group which all contributed to his IELTS success journey and the results speak for themselves. This approach to IELTS, which is the same with approaching any kind of skills course, is what will get you the results.

I was speaking to another student, Fariba, yesterday she has set herself a goal of band 8 – this is a very bold goal and will she get it? Yes, I think so because she is going about getting this goal in the right way, creating a timetable, collecting the materials she needs, giving herself enough time to achieve that goal and most vital of all looking for the support that she needs.

Maintaining focus on your goal is very important, but unless you create a path that leads to that goal and follow it systematically day by day and look for help and support when you meet roadblocks the goal will not be possible. A big dream is vital but a method of reaching it is just as important.

So here is a proven pattern for reaching and staying focused during your IELTS exam preparation.

  1. Set your big goal – make it bold if you need 7 in all go for 7 in everything only a really bold goal will get you out of bed every day and into action
  2. Create a path to get you to our goal – look at your circumstances, the time you have available, where you are located etc. will you join a class? Will you study online or using books? What will work for you?
  3. Set daily, weekly, monthly,  goals – how much study can you manage in a day? Work out a timetable. Make sure you balance all the topics that means English topics too such as grammar and vocabulary as we’ll as IELTS skills.
  4. Gather your materials – will these be books, online materials or a combination. Think about what you enjoy doing and remember the internet is full of bright shiny objects that will distract you so make sure you can study seriously on there.
  5. Be systematic – follow a system each day this should include a set pattern of study, some way of recording your scores so you can measure these and see your progress, some way of recording your experience such as a learning diary. You’ll need to pause every now and again to set new targets and get your work assessed so you know if you are on-track.
  6. Finally get support – being a lone-ranger is a lonely journey so find others who can share your journey, join groups. If you are able to get a teacher to help you. Your choice will depend on your preferences and budget.

This needn’t be hard work. If you make sure all this is in place before you begin then your journey will be clearer and you will be better able to cope with any stumbles on the way and there will be those as not journey is ever without pitfalls now and then.

And if you want proof that this works just look at Luciano’s comment – and he is not the only one to achieve these kinds of results recently using this step-by-step approach.

If you want all of this done for you in an easy and systematic way then you should really think about joining the IELTS Step By Step programme.
