(short and sweet today)
I get asked all the time about reading and how to conquer it. To which I have 2 answers:
- Firstly – have a good level of English (vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure etc.)
- Secondly, - acquire great techniques (skimming, scanning, key words)
- Now practise and practise and practise and when you’ve done that, practise some more.
- Oh, and please read – you can’t do a reading test without reading!
But some students try – can you believe it!
They watch YouTube videos about reading, about the techniques but never practise and hope that the information ‘about’ reading will get them through.
It’s rather like trying to drive a car from a diagram or learn to swim on the beach – totally ineffective and just a little bit crazy.
You can only improve skill by doing – by taking action, trying, failing, scratching your head, figuring out the mistakes, taking more action, getting it right and then moving to the next level – onwards and upwards to where you need to be.
Mistakes are good, they make you improve, they help you to learn, don’t worry about them.
If you don’t know why you made the mistake and can’t figure it out then ask someone – this group is a great forum for doing this!
I LOVE IELTS reading – my favourite part of the test!
And my favourite activity in teaching is making IELTS students love reading too as well as getting high, high scores.
But nothing will change if you don’t DO it!!
