(a quick one today )
I often get asked about headings in IELTS reading so if this question type causes you some problems here are 3 things to do to try and get more answers correct.
- Skim the paragraph (you need good skimming skills here to make this quick), then ask yourself ‘what is this telling me?’ By doing this you will pick out the main information. Then check the headings and see what fits.
- Don’t try to choose the perfect heading, pick any that fit the answer (sometimes there is one clear one but not always). Make a note of these - there may be two or three - and move on to the next paragraph. Wasting time trying to find the ‘perfect’ heading will cause you to run out of time at the end of the test.
- Complete all the heading questions like this and then as you work through you will see that some headings fit better with certain paragraphs. If you still have one or two (it won’t be more than this) headings at the end which are still not decided then look again at these paragraphs and decide which is the best one.
The biggest advantage of not looking for the perfect heading immediately is that if you get the first two wrong then you will have 4 incorrect answers straight away – which is a lot of marks to lose. By not ‘nailing’ yourself to a choice straight away and keeping an open mind, you have a better chance of getting them correct.
Try it and see what a difference it makes
