IELTS Speaking exercises to do on your own

Things you can practise by yourself

Part One

  • Search for typical questions
  • Imagine what you would say if you were asked this
  • If you can work with a friend, then be examiner and student
  • Record the conversations, analyse and repeat to improve

Part Two

  • This is better practised by yourself (unless you can get good feedback)
  • Pick a topic, speak, record yourself, analyse and criticise, record again and improve – keep doing this with the same topic until you are happy
  • Now pick another topic and repeat

Part Three

  • Practise like part one
  • Work on more advanced vocabulary and structures
  • Consciously try to make your answers more sophisticated – but don’t memorise and don’t forget about the question
  • Imagine yourself in the exam producing the very best language you have – how would that sound?
  • Now record it and see how it sounds!

Pronunciation

  • Listen and repeat
  • Try to get as close as possible to the original
  • Record yourself doing it and then compare with the original speaker
  • How can you improve it
  • Do it again, and again, and again until you are happy
