IELTS Writing is often the last part of the IELTS test to reach the score that you want.
There is a reason for this.
In order to write you need good vocabulary, good structure, a knowledge of how to organise thoughts and ideas and finally some ideas and thoughts that you can actually organise and express in English. You need to provide a good answer to the question, make sure everything flows well and provide some quite sophisticated language .
The next problem is TIME – it takes TIME to learn all of this and it takes time to do all of this.
And EFFORT – yes it takes EFFORT too - to think, to plan, to write and to check – is it any wonder that writing is the last skill to reach the high bands?
Yep, there is a lot going on here. So naturally it can need some support to improve.
Most good writers will think about, plan and then draft and re-draft their writing until they are happy with the result. This is the process that will get the best writing and this is the process that you need to follow if you want to get a high band in your writing.
Does this sound too hard?
It may, but it is the reality. You have to do the work to get the result.
With writing the important thing is the quality of your IELTS writing and not the quantity you produce.
IELTS writing us unique in the fact that less really is more –the more you write the worse it can be so that by writing less but focusing on the quality you can get a good score. That means learning how to make your writing more compact and learning a specific amount of language that will ensure that you write a good band for both Task 1 and 2 in the right time and with the right number of words. You have to understand how to write at band 7 or 8 and doing lots and lots and lots of tasks with no-one to check will not help you to do this. What will help you is great feedback from someone who really knows what the IELTS examiner is actually looking for.
You need to know:
- If you are answering the question correctly
- If you are using the right vocabulary
- If you are using the right sentences
- If you are using the right grammar
You also need to know where your mistakes are and how to correct these.
In fact, not getting expert feedback can actually be dangerous as you may end up learning mistakes and it is far harder to undo bad writing than it is to teach good writing from the beginning.
So, in answer to the question – What is the quickest way to get Band 7 and 8?
It is to get someone who can help and support you in your IELTS writing.
